💡 Bonus: How to Disable BitLocker if It’s Enabled

When you buy a new laptop, it usually comes with only one C drive. But keeping everything on one drive is risky — if Windows crashes, you could lose your files! Creating separate partitions helps keep your data organized and safe.

Let’s go step-by-step.

🛠 Step 1: Open Disk Management

  1. Press Windows Key + X
  2. Click on Disk Management

✂️ Step 2: Shrink the C Drive

  1. Right-click on the C drive
  2. Select Shrink Volume
  3. Choose the amount you want to shrink (in MB)
    👉 Example: 100000 MB = 100 GB
  4. Click Shrink

You’ll now see Unallocated space.

➕ Step 3: Create a New Partition

  1. Right-click on Unallocated Space
  2. Click New Simple Volume
  3. Follow the wizard:
    • Choose volume size (keep it full)
    • Assign a letter (like D, E, etc.)
    • Format as NTFS

✅ Done! You now have a new partition, e.g. D Drive.

🔐 Bonus: How to Disable BitLocker (If It’s On)

Some new laptops come with BitLocker enabled, which encrypts your drive. You must turn it off before partitioning or system repairs.

👉 How to Check:

  1. Go to Control Panel > System & Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption
  2. If BitLocker is On, click Turn off BitLocker
  3. Wait while it decrypts the drive (don’t turn off your PC!)

📌 BitLocker must be off to avoid issues during system backups or OS installs.

💡 Why You Should Create Partitions

  • 🗂️ Separate your Windows files (C:) and personal data (D:, E:)
  • 💥 Avoid full data loss if Windows crashes
  • 🚀 Easier to reinstall Windows without losing personal files
  • 🧹 Makes backups and storage management simpler
